Pest treatment and fire retardation, waterproofing, durability

2. Are the products and materials treated for pests and fire retardation? If so, how?

Normal thatching is a natural grass product, it is flamable however we can provide thatch (At additional cost) that has been immersed in a fire retardent treatment approved by the CSIRO.

It is compulsory for all natural products to be treated for pests and disease upon entry to Australia.

We use an AQIS (Australian Quarantine Inspection Service) approved treatment process as do all thatch importers.

A regular spray with surface spray will keep spiders etc at bay.

3. How effective is the waterproofing in both types of thatch?

Bali Thatch - 100% waterproof when installed correctly, important factors here are roof pitch, thatch quality and spacing.

Cape Reed - 99% effective. A few drops may come through during heavy rain. This African thatch will provide 99% UV shade protection

Cedar Shingles - 100% waterproof

The 3 types of roofing above will all provide shade 10 to 12 degrees cooler than any conventional type of roofing material.

Synthetic Thatch is not naturally waterproof but is usually installed with a waterproof membrane

4. How long will the thatch last?

Bali thatch should last 12 to 15 years depending on environmental variables, thatch quality, roof pitch and thatch spacing.

Cape Reed has a shorter life 6 to 8 years is very common and we have some up to 10 years old now, but various environmental factors can have positive or negative effects on the thatch life.

It is important to remember that Thatch is a natural product and life expectancy predictions are based on our past experience and cannot be guaranteed.

We are however one of a very few companies that have been involved in thatching continuously for over 15 years in Australia so we believe we have the knowledge to give you life span predictions based on our actual history where many others are just pure guess work or speculation.

If someone says to you their thatch will last for decades ask on what basis are they making that prediction.

Unfortunately, like every industry there are those that will tell you anything to get a sale, at Oz Thatch we believe that good quality, honest advice and value for money will ensure you are a satisfied customer and by doing that we will still be here to give back up service in another 15 years.
