Installation time, price comparison, warranty, DIY kits, colour fastness

5. How long does it take to install?

This depends on the size of the installation. The average smaller hut is 1-2 days for a Bali hut or less than a day for a smaller Cape Reed installation.

6. What is the difference between the thatching materials?

BALI THATCH

Alang Alang as it is called in Indonesia is a Razor Grass grown in Bali and used for hundreds of years for roofing. It is a wide flat grass that is very tough and durable.

It comes pre-woven on a split bamboo batten so it can be attached straight to the rafters giving a very decorative underside. Our thatch strips are 2.8mt wide and approximately 850mm to 950mm long, with thatch about 12mm thick, it should be applied at very close spacings of 60mm to 70mm on a 30 degree or steeper pitch.

We use 35 degrees for our Gazebos and Bali thatch hut roofs.

Around 7 strips per m2 will give you the minimum recommended cover.

AFRICAN CAPE REED

Cape Reed is a reed grown in Africa and is used for producing thatch tiles. The Cape Reed Tile is quite durable and very easy to install, It is manufactured using a polyurethane spine to bind the reed, and clips straight onto an 8mm steel rod batten, or it can be nailed, screwed, or stapled to a timber batten.

A tile is 800mm wide X 450mm deep and should overlap around 100mm It requires 30 deg min pitch on the roof.

Around 3 ½ tiles per m2 are required

CEDAR SHINGLES

A shingle roof is a series of short wooden planks, about half a meter in length and 100mm to 200 mm wide. They overlap each other 3 deep, creating a long lasting, appealing waterproof roof.

After lengthy investigation we decided to only supply and use cedar shingles imported by us from Canada, they are a far superior quality to the thin Indonesian ironwood shingle commonly imported in kits. Our Cedar shingles are 12mm thick and pressure treated to resist rot, wood borers, termites, and fungal growth.

Two types are available, plain random width or decorative "Fancy Cut" styles

SYNTHETICS

ART THATCH is a UV stabilised PVC imitation thatch tile 500mm wide X 280mm long, it can be installed over an existing roof or onto a plywood surface that is covered in a waterproof membrane. It has a 160mm overlap and is simply stapled to the ply.

It gives an authentic appearance and is fire resistant. It is backed by a 10 year manufacturer's warranty and should last in excess of 30 years.

FIBRE THATCH is a synthetic version of the Cape Reed natural thatch.

The advantages of synthetic thatch are life expectancy and natural looks. However synthetic thatches will not provide the same natural cooling as real thatch and will also requires a waterproof membrane underneath.

7. Are additional services easily available and what sort of warranty do your products come with?

Yes, additional services are only a phone call away and we supply a full warranty certificate with all our work.

Oz thatch gives a 10 year structural guarantee on all of its Gazebo's and cedar shingles and a 12 month 100% waterproof guarantee on its Bali Thatch installations.

Bali thatch is guaranteed against faulty manufacture and weaving for 5 years

Posts are guaranteed by the manufacturer for 25 years against ternites and rot.

Cape Reed Thatch is covered by a manufacturers limited 3 year warranty.

As we have been specialising in thatch roofs in Brisbane under the same name for almost 17 years you can have confidence we will still be there if you ever need assistance.

A warranty is only as good as the company that provides it,

BEWARE there are a few companies that change their name and location regularly to avoid honoring the unrealistic warrantys they offer. You will find they usually operate out of short term, rented high profile premises and if the warranty sounds too good to be true (such as a 20 year guarantee on thatch that one company offers) it is probably worthless as you can be sure they wont exist when you need to make a claim.

What we dont cover, (which is as important as what we do cover)

Timber and thatching are natural products and even though we use the best quality materials available they can occassionally crack, split , warp or fade, if the fault affects to structural integrity of the structure we will certainly repair or replace whatever is nesesscary, however we do not cover defects that are purely cosmetic or due normal degridation, ageing or weathering.

8. How soon can you install my gazebo, or supply a DIY Kit?

Depending on the season – we can usually start installation within 10-14 weekdays of receiving your order, however it is unwise to call early December wanting your Gazebo installed for Christmas

All Cape Reed Kits are kept in stock while Bali kits are made to order and usually take up to 7 days.

We always stock replacement thatch at our Queensland warehouse.

9. Will the thatching discolour and if so, why?

Yes, being a natural product it will discolour over time with exposure to the elements.

Balinese Thatch will turn a light silver-grey colour while African Cape Reed will darken to a Dark brown almost black colour.

Synthetic thatches are UV stabilised to keep their original colour.
