Scope of custom designs, Australian Standards, why Oz Thatch

11. Can you build a thatched pavilion or deck to my design?

Yes we can supply and install decking or provide a DIY decking kit.

We also custom build thatched roofs to your design or can add a thatched extension to your existing home.

12. Is price a guide to quality?

Tricky question but generally price is a guide to quality, some companies specialise in mass production of low quality kits at discounted prices, this is only achievable by cutting corners, for example, we went to Bali 6 years ago to secure the best quality thatch available, prior to that the quality varied greatly and was generally not ideal.

We approached thatch growers and weavers and now deal exclusively with that growing Co op in Bali.

They grow Alang Alang exclusively for Oz Thatch, we pay them a better price, but if you call in to our Alberton display center we will show you the difference, it is thicker, longer and more tightly woven which is a very important factor in determining thatch life and waterproofing ability long term.

Many companies in Australia deal with bulk thatch importers that supply thatch to a price not a quality.

Here is just one example of why a little extra cost goes a long way -On the hips of your Bali hut is thatching called mudbugs which is basically bundles of grass that seal the corners, Almost all thatching companies tie and attach these using plastic cable ties, after about 18 months in the sun the plastic breaks and you get big bundles of thatch falling out. We take an extra hour or two preperation and use stainless steel tie wire which holds the mudbug in place for the life of the hut, to the unwary they all look the same in the display yard, but 2 years later you learn why that hut was a little cheaper.

We spend alot of our time repairing 2 year old huts from other manufacturers.

Be wary of sellers that hide behind EBAY or web site addresses, they might just be hiding poor quality.

Generally you get what you pay for, rule out the very cheap, logic tells you all is not right there, and rule out the over expensive, what's left is most likely good quality and will give you long term value for money.

The stretch of spending a bit more for quality is soon forgotten, while the pleasure and satisfaction of a quality, long lasting thatched or shingle roof tropical hut will last for many years.

13. Do you need a council permit for a thatched roof gazebo?

Many councils do not require permits, some only require a permit if the structure is over 10 m2

Some do not consider thatching to be a solid roof structure and hence do not have a requirement for a permit, however some councils do require a planning or building permit.

We also fabricate a freestanding portable gazebo version, most councils have no requirement for temporary structures or portable buildings.

It is best to check with your local authority if you are unsure.

All of our structures meet Australian standards and can be approved by council if required.

14. Are you Licensed Builders and do your products meet Australian Standards?

Yes we are licensed builders (BSA 1132118), all of our structures are built to Australian Building Codes and Standards.

15. Why should I choose an Oz Thatch structure or kit?

We have been in the thatching industry for almost 15 years; you do not last that long if you don't produce a good quality product, and give good service to back it up.

We are a small family company who care about our customers and work hard to give good quality and personal service at a fair price.

If you have any other questions please just ask, we don't sell pools, spa's or hardware, we dont employ salesmen, the person that answers the phone will have a sound knowledge of our products and will be able to assist with accurate, well informed advice.
