DIY thatch pack list, pest damage, what can I thatch, kits or install

16. What comes in a DIY kit?

The DIY kit quality is exactly the same as our fully erected structures.

Our Balinese kits come with the frame all pre cut, marked, drilled and stained, all thatching and galvanised fasteners are supplied and 200mm* H5 treated posts are included but unstained as many people want to paint or varnish their posts to match another structure, they can also get marked during transit and installation, Stain matching the roof frame is supplied in the kit for application after erection.

*150mm posts are used on huts 2mt and smaller, other size posts available on request.

All the hard work is done but typically it will take a day or two to complete your structure with only basic skills and tools required.

The Cape Reed kits have a pre welded and painted frame which easily bolts together and fits on top of the 125mm treated posts which are supplied in natural colour. Post stain is available as an option.

Galvanasied frame is optional and is recommended if it will be located close to the sea.

The Cape Reed thatch is then simply clipped on to the battons, you should be enjoying a refreshing drink under it by the end of the day.

Simple step by step instructions are included.

We offer phone assistance during construction if you do have any questions.

Engineers certifications and drawings for council approval are available at additional cost.

17. Will bugs or animals affect my thatch?

It is unlikely that your thatch will be affected by bugs or insects, if you do have a problem an occasional spray underneath with a repellent surface spray will keep spiders and bugs away for months.

Generally birds do not like the thatch as it is a non native razor grass and is not comfortable for nesting.

18. Can my existing roof be thatched or re-thatched?

In many cases we can thatch an existing structure providing the pitch is 30 degrees or more, or we can construct a new roof frame to suit your existing structure.

Most imported Bali thatch roof frames are not economic for re-thatching.

19. Do you deliver kits or erect Australia wide?

We deliver DIY gazebo kits Australia wide, we provide an erection service in SE Queensland and can arrange installation in the Greater Sydney and Adelaide areas.

In other places you can DIY or use a local builder/handyman, all the hard work is done in the kit manufacture and with simple step by step instructions it is quite easy to install.

Although we will happily arrange freight at a competative rate it is important to realise that we do not personally deliver most kits. Damage or loss is not controllable or covered by us, in this event you need to deal with the carrier or arrange your own insurance, we can arrange insurance on your behalf if required.

20. How do I know if I am dealing with a reputable company or buying a quality product?

Here are a few things to consider when choosing your thatch company

BUILDERS LICENCE -

Are they a licenced builder ?

Do they display their licence number ?

BUSINESS HISTORY -

How long have they really been in the thatching industry ? Oz Thatch is one of only 3 companies in SEQ that have been continiously operating under the same name for over 5 years

What warranty and after sales service do they offer ?

Do they have a product dislay center ?

Will they happily provide previous customer contacts as references ?

BUILDING REGULATION COMPLIANCE -

Does the structure comply with Australian Building Standards ?

ENGINEERS DRAWINGS

Are Engineer structural plans available for inspection and purchase ?

STRUCTURE ORIGIN

Do you know the difference between the quality, and structural standards of Australian Oz Thatch manufactured frames, and imported non complying kits ? If not read Q 10

INSTALLATION SERVICE -

Will they install their own products ?

THATCH QUALITY

Will they will supply a free sample of their thatch for you to compare ? (most companies will market their thatch as premium grade, few actually use it, so you should obtain a few samples to compare to ensure it will provide a long weatherproof service life.
